Evolution of a Poem

These are the Midnight Hours

These are the midnight hours
Of my mood melancholy,
When all my heart can see
Is my lifelong folly.
The pits, the traps,
The dead-end trails,
My spirit's darkness
As my last hope fails.
Locked alone within the cellar
Of my trampled hope's despair,
My mind can't find the doorway out:
I look, but you're not there.
Spirits shouting
From left and right--
Depression deepens:
Surrender the fight.
Then I feel your hand take my hand
On the astral planes above;
Your light defeats my darkness,
As my soul is saved through love.
Words desert me:
How can I say thank you?
For being my friend,
For helping me get through...
